Our Toyota Prius Depreciation Analysis and Recommendations

Toyota Prius owners are proud and loyal, and they love driving their hybrids around town. Unlike most hybrid models, the Prius actually holds its value quite well, relative to its peers. Even when compared to tradition fuel vehicles, the Prius rates somewhat above average in terms of depreciation, but do Prius owners really care? The Prius is the modern-day version of what the VW Beetle was in the 70's, an iconic symbol of peace, love and harmony. Check the batteries before you buy, however, as they are an expensive replacement if they are shot.

The 2014, 2015 & 2018 Toyota Prius model years are currently the best values.

On average, expect to pay only 42% of the original cost with 50% of the vehicle's lifetime remaining for a 2014 Prius. That gives it a Net Used Value® score of 7.99 which factors in annual maintenance costs, price decline, reliable years left and available inventory.

Also consider the 2015 & 2018 Prius model years. Those currently have a generally low risk of any significant depreciation over the next several years.

While we would advise holding onto this vehicle for a few years, that's not always the plan. Dealers have access to similar figures so they know that your vehicle has a low risk of depreciation.
